OpenAIs CEO confirms the company isnt training GPT-5 and wont for some time
GPT-5 will be a ‚significant leap forward’ says Sam Altman heres why
For example, Yohei Nakajima of Venture Capital firm Untapped gave an AI system the goal of starting and growing a business and instructed it that its first task was to figure out what its first task should be. The AI system then searched the internet for relevant information and learned how to create a business plan, a marketing strategy, and more. The ability to customize and personalize GPTs for specific tasks or styles is one of the most important areas of improvement, Sam said on Unconfuse Me.
The development of GPT-5 is already underway, but there’s already been a move to halt its progress. A petition signed by over a thousand public figures and tech leaders has been published, requesting a pause in development on anything beyond GPT-4. Significant people involved in the petition include Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, Andrew Yang, and many more. Last year, Shane Legg, Google DeepMind’s co-founder and chief AGI scientist, told Time Magazine that he estimates there to be a 50% chance that AGI will be developed by 2028.
Both OpenAI and several researchers have also tested the chatbot on real-life exams. GPT-4 was shown as having a decent chance of passing the difficult chartered financial analyst (CFA) exam. It scored in the 90th percentile of the bar exam, aced the SAT reading and writing section, and was in the 99th to 100th percentile on the 2020 USA Biology Olympiad semifinal exam. More recently, a report claimed that OpenAI’s boss had come up with an audacious plan to procure the vast sums of GPUs required to train bigger AI models.
The current, free-to-use version of ChatGPT is based on OpenAI’s GPT-3.5, a large language model (LLM) that uses natural language processing (NLP) with machine learning. Its release in November 2022 sparked a tornado of chatter about the capabilities of AI to supercharge workflows. In doing so, it also fanned concerns about the technology taking away humans’ jobs — or being a danger to mankind in the long run.
Yet his latest idea of restricting the reach of accounts that have not paid for a Twitter Blue membership has not gone down well, and his time in charge has been beset by divisive moves that have had limited success, to put it mildly. At the same time, bestowing an AI with that much power could have unintended consequences — ones that we simply haven’t thought of yet. It doesn’t mean the robot apocalypse is imminent, but it certainly raises a lot of questions about what the negative effects of AGI could be. That makes Chen’s claim pretty explosive, considering all the possibilities AGI might enable.
Claude 3.5 Sonnet’s current lead in the benchmark performance race could soon evaporate. In a January 2024 interview with Bill Gates, Altman confirmed that development on GPT-5 was underway. He also said that OpenAI would focus on building better reasoning capabilities as well as the ability to process videos. The current-gen GPT-4 model already offers speech and image functionality, so video is the next logical step. The company also showed off a text-to-video AI tool called Sora in the following weeks. Like its predecessor, GPT-5 (or whatever it will be called) is expected to be a multimodal large language model (LLM) that can accept text or encoded visual input (called a „prompt”).
Based on the trajectory of previous releases, OpenAI may not release GPT-5 for several months. It may further be delayed due to a general sense of panic that AI tools like ChatGPT have created around the world. ChatGPT-5 and GPT-5 rumors: Expected release date, all the rumors so far
If GPT-5 follows a similar schedule, we may have to wait until late 2024 or early 2025. OpenAI has reportedly demoed early versions of GPT-5 to select enterprise users, indicating a mid-2024 release date for the new language model. The testers reportedly found that ChatGPT-5 delivered higher-quality responses than its predecessor. However, the model is still in its training stage and will have to undergo safety testing before it can reach end-users. That’s why Altman’s confirmation that OpenAI is not currently developing GPT-5 won’t be of any consolation to people worried about AI safety.
Sora is the latest salvo in OpenAI’s quest to build true multimodality into its products right now, ChatGPT Plus (the chatbot’s paid tier, costing $20 a month) offers integration with OpenAI’s DALL-E AI image generator. It lets you make “original” AI images simply by inputting a text prompt into ChatGPT. These developments might lead to launch delays for future updates or even price increases for the Plus tier. We’re only speculating at this time, as we’re in new territory with generative AI. We’d expect the same rules to apply to access the latest version of ChatGPT once GPT-5 rolls out. The new generative AI engine should be free for users of Bing Chat and certain other apps.
The upcoming model GPT-5 may offer significant improvements in speed and efficiency, so there’s reason to be optimistic and excited about its problem-solving capabilities. GPT-4 is currently only capable of processing requests with up to 8,192 tokens, which loosely translates to 6,144 words. OpenAI briefly allowed initial testers to run commands with up to 32,768 tokens (roughly 25,000 words or 50 pages of context), and this will be made widely available in the upcoming releases. GPT-4’s current length of queries is twice what is supported on the free version of GPT-3.5, and we can expect support for much bigger inputs with GPT-5. Others such as Google and Meta have released their own GPTs with their own names, all of which are known collectively as large language models. In the case of GPT-4, the AI chatbot can provide human-like responses, and even recognise and generate images and speech.
GPT-3 represented another major step forward for OpenAI and was released in June 2020. The 175 billion parameter model was now capable of producing text that many reviewers found to be indistinguishable for that written by humans. To get an idea of when GPT-5 might be launched, it’s helpful to look at when past GPT models have been released. AGI is the term given when AI becomes “superintelligent,” or gains the capacity to learn, reason and make decisions with human levels of cognition. It basically means that AGI systems are able to operate completely independent of learned information, thereby moving a step closer to being sentient beings. “A lot” could well refer to OpenAI’s wildly impressive AI video generator Sora and even a potential incremental GPT-4.5 release.
As AI technology continues to advance, the question of how to achieve AGI meaning will remain a key focus of research and development. A generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) is a large language model (LLM) neural network that can generate code, answer questions, and summarize text, among other natural language processing tasks. GPT basically scans through millions of web articles and books to get relevant results in a search for written content and generate desired results. In September 2023, OpenAI announced ChatGPT’s enhanced multimodal capabilities, enabling you to have a verbal conversation with the chatbot, while GPT-4 with Vision can interpret images and respond to questions about them. And in February, OpenAI introduced a text-to-video model called Sora, which is currently not available to the public.
Whichever is the case, Altman could be right about not currently training GPT-5, but this could be because the groundwork for the actual training has not been completed. In other words, while actual training hasn’t started, work on the model could be underway. Already, various sources have predicted that GPT-5 is currently undergoing training, with an anticipated release window set for early 2024. However, just because OpenAI is not working on GPT-5 doesn’t mean it’s not expanding the capabilities of GPT-4 — or, as Altman was keen to stress, considering the safety implications of such work.
If it does become a reality, it could have a significant impact on various fields and applications that rely on natural language processing, and the most groundbreaking of all these features will be achieving the AGI level. It’s crucial to view any flashy AI release through a pragmatic lens and manage your expectations. As AI practitioners, it’s on us to be careful, considerate, and aware of the shortcomings whenever we’re deploying language model outputs, especially in contexts with high stakes. So, what does all this mean for you, a programmer who’s learning about AI and curious about the future of this amazing technology?
- There’s every chance Sora could make its way into public beta or ChatGPT Plus availability before GPT-5 is even released, but even if that’s the case, it’ll be bigger and better than ever when OpenAI’s next-gen LLM does finally land.
- What if it could achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI), the ability to understand and perform any task that a human can?
- A petition signed by over a thousand public figures and tech leaders has been published, requesting a pause in development on anything beyond GPT-4.
- As opposed to a simple voice assistant like Siri or Google Assistant, ChatGPT is built on what is called an LLM (Large Language Model).
It follows that GPT-4.5 itself could be released around summer ’24, as OpenAI tries to keep up with newly release rivals like Anthropic’s Claude 3, and ultimately paving the way for GPT-5 to launch in late-2024 or some point in 2025. This might find its way into ChatGPT sooner rather than later, while GPT-5 stays under development and slowly rolls out behind closed doors to OpenAI’s enterprise customers. Right now, it looks like GPT-5 could be released in the near future, or still be a ways off. All we know for sure is that the new model has been confirmed and its training is underway. Google is developing Bard, an alternative to ChatGPT that will be available in Google Search.
Amidst OpenAI’s myriad achievements, like a video generator called Sora, controversies have swiftly followed. OpenAI has not definitively shared any information about how Sora was trained, which has creatives questioning whether their data was used without credit or compensation. OpenAI is also facing multiple lawsuits related to copyright infringement from news outlets — with one coming from The New York Times, and another coming from The Intercept, Raw Story, and AlterNet.
You can foun additiona information about ai customer service and artificial intelligence and NLP. When configured in a specific way, GPT models can power conversational chatbot applications like ChatGPT. A 2025 date may also make sense given recent news and controversy surrounding safety at OpenAI. In his interview at the 2024 Aspen Ideas Festival, Altman noted that there were about eight months between when OpenAI finished training ChatGPT-4 and when they released the model. I have been told that gpt5 is scheduled to complete training this december and that openai expects it to achieve agi.which means we will all hotly debate as to whether it actually achieves agi.which means it will. The best way to prepare for GPT-5 is to keep familiarizing yourself with the GPT models that are available.
‚Materially better’ GPT-5 could come to ChatGPT as early as this summer
OpenAI is reportedly training the model and will conduct red-team testing to identify and correct potential issues before its public release. Because we’re talking in the trillions here, the impact of any increase will be eye-catching. It’s also safe to expect GPT-5 to have a larger context window and more current knowledge cut-off date, with an outside chance it might even be able to process certain information (such as social media sources) in real-time. GPT is shorthand AI jargon for “Generative pre-trained transformer.” It’s a large language model, or LLM, developed by AI powerhouse OpenAI that serves as the framework for company’s chatbot, ChatGPT – one of the best AI chatbots around. Achieving AGI meaning could require new breakthroughs in areas such as natural language processing, perception, reasoning, and decision-making, as well as more advanced hardware and infrastructure.

The latest report claims OpenAI has begun training GPT-5 as it preps for the AI model’s release in the middle of this year. Once its training is complete, the system will go through multiple stages of safety testing, according to Business Insider. GPT stands for generative pre-trained transformer, which is an AI engine built and refined by OpenAI to power the different versions of ChatGPT. Like the processor inside your computer, each new edition of the chatbot runs on a brand new GPT with more capabilities. The new AI model, known as GPT-5, is slated to arrive as soon as this summer, according to two sources in the know who spoke to Business Insider. Ahead of its launch, some businesses have reportedly tried out a demo of the tool, allowing them to test out its upgraded abilities.
You can start by taking our AI courses that cover the latest AI topics, from Intro to ChatGPT to Build a Machine Learning Model and Intro to Large Language Models. We also have AI courses and case studies in our catalog that incorporate a chatbot that’s powered by GPT-3.5, so you can get hands-on experience writing, testing, and refining prompts for specific tasks using the AI system. For example, in Pair Programming with Generative AI Case Study, you can learn prompt engineering techniques to pair program in Python with a ChatGPT-like chatbot. Look at all of our new AI features to become a more efficient and experienced developer who’s ready once GPT-5 comes around. The desktop version offers nearly identical functionality to the web-based iteration.
OpenAI’s GPT-5 release could be as early as this summer
Users can chat directly with the AI, query the system using natural language prompts in either text or voice, search through previous conversations, and upload documents and images for analysis. You can even take screenshots of either the entire screen or just a single window, for upload. I have been told that gpt5 is scheduled to complete training this december and that openai expects it to achieve agi. At the time, in mid-2023, OpenAI announced that it had no intentions of training a successor to GPT-4. However, that changed by the end of 2023 following a long-drawn battle between CEO Sam Altman and the board over differences in opinion.
Some enterprise customers have recently received demos of the latest model and its related enhancements to the ChatGPT tool, another person familiar with the process said. These people, whose identities Business Insider has confirmed, asked to remain anonymous so they could speak freely. Some experts argue that achieving AGI meaning could have far-reaching implications for our understanding of the universe and our place in it, as it could enable more powerful tools for scientific discovery and exploration. If artificial general intelligence (AGI) can be developed, it has the potential to help us improve ourselves and the world by boosting prosperity, expanding access to education, and expanding the frontiers of scientific understanding.
GPT-4 was the most significant updates to the chatbot as it introduced a host of new features and under-the-hood improvements. For context, GPT-3 debuted in 2020 and OpenAI had simply fine-tuned it for conversation in the time leading up to ChatGPT’s launch. The steady march of AI innovation means that OpenAI hasn’t stopped with GPT-4. That’s especially true now that Google has announced its Gemini language model, the larger variants of which can match GPT-4. In response, OpenAI released a revised GPT-4o model that offers multimodal capabilities and an impressive voice conversation mode. While it’s good news that the model is also rolling out to free ChatGPT users, it’s not the big upgrade we’ve been waiting for.

Over a year has passed since ChatGPT first blew us away with its impressive natural language capabilities. A lot has changed since then, with Microsoft investing a staggering $10 billion in ChatGPT’s creator OpenAI and competitors like Google’s Gemini threatening to take the top spot. Given the latter then, the entire tech industry is waiting for OpenAI to announce GPT-5, its next-generation language model.

In November 2022, ChatGPT entered the chat, adding chat functionality and the ability to conduct human-like dialogue to the foundational model. The first iteration of ChatGPT was fine-tuned from GPT-3.5, a model between 3 and 4. If you want to learn more about ChatGPT and prompt engineering best practices, our free course Intro to ChatGPT is a great way to understand how to work with this powerful tool. The “o” stands for “omni,” because GPT-4o can accept text, audio, and image input and deliver outputs in any combination of these mediums.
The release date could be delayed depending on the duration of the safety testing process. Considering the time it took to train previous models and the time required to fine-tune them, the last quarter of 2024 is still a possibility. However, considering we’ve barely explored the depths of GPT-4, OpenAI might choose to make incremental improvements to the current model well into 2024 before pushing for Chat GPT a GPT-5 release in the following year. However, Murati clarifies that this „Ph.D.-level” intelligence is task-specific. While these systems can achieve human-level performance in certain tasks, they still lag behind in many others. AGI is the concept of “artificial general intelligence,” which refers to an AI’s ability to comprehend and learn any task or idea that humans can wrap their heads around.
While GPT-3.5 is free to use through ChatGPT, GPT-4 is only available to users in a paid tier called ChatGPT Plus. With GPT-5, as computational requirements and the proficiency of the chatbot increase, we may also see an increase in pricing. For now, you may instead use Microsoft’s Bing AI Chat, which is also based on GPT-4 and is free to use. However, you will be bound to Microsoft’s Edge browser, where the AI chatbot will follow you everywhere in your journey on the web as a „co-pilot.” GPT-4 sparked multiple debates around the ethical use of AI and how it may be detrimental to humanity. It was shortly followed by an open letter signed by hundreds of tech leaders, educationists, and dignitaries, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, calling for a pause on the training of systems „more advanced than GPT-4.”
OpenAI’s Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) is one of the most talked about technologies ever. It is the lifeblood of ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that has taken the internet by storm. Consequently, all fans of ChatGPT typically look gpt5 release out with excitement toward the release of the next iteration of GPT. Similar to Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott’s comments about next-gen AI systems passing Ph.D. exams, Murati highlights GPT-5’s advanced memory and reasoning capabilities.
However, the Turing test has been criticized for being too subjective and limited, as it only evaluates linguistic abilities and not other aspects of intelligence such as perception, memory, or emotion. Moreover, some AI systems may be able to pass the Turing test by using tricks or deception rather than genuine understanding or reasoning. Before moving on to GPT5, let’s take a quick look at what previous LLMs had to offer. This blog was originally published in March 2024 and has been updated to include new details about GPT-4o, the latest release from OpenAI.
This standalone upgrade should work on all software updates, including GPT-4 and GPT-5. While there are still some debates about artificial intelligence-generated images, people are still looking for the best AI art generators. So far, no AI system has convincingly demonstrated AGI capabilities, although some have shown impressive feats of ANI in specific domains. For example, GPT-4 can generate coherent and diverse texts on various topics, as well as answer questions and perform simple calculations based on textual or visual inputs. However, GPT-4 still relies on large amounts of data and predefined prompts to function well. It often makes mistakes or produces nonsensical outputs when faced with unfamiliar or complex scenarios.
Sam hinted that future iterations of GPT could allow developers to incorporate users’ own data. “The ability to know about you, your email, your calendar, how you like appointments booked, connected to other outside data sources, all of that,” he said on the podcast. Considering how it renders machines capable of making their own decisions, AGI is seen as a threat to humanity, echoed in a blog written by Sam Altman in February 2023. In the blog, Altman weighs AGI’s https://chat.openai.com/ potential benefits while citing the risk of „grievous harm to the world.” The OpenAI CEO also calls on global conventions about governing, distributing benefits of, and sharing access to AI. OpenAI released GPT-3 in June 2020 and followed it up with a newer version, internally referred to as „davinci-002,” in March 2022. Then came „davinci-003,” widely known as GPT-3.5, with the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, followed by GPT-4’s release in March 2023.
Is GPT-5 being trained?
Zen 5 release date, availability, and price
AMD originally confirmed that the Ryzen 9000 desktop processors will launch on July 31, 2024, two weeks after the launch date of the Ryzen AI 300. The initial lineup includes the Ryzen X, the Ryzen X, the Ryzen X, and the Ryzen X. However, AMD delayed the CPUs at the last minute, with the Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 showing up on August 8, and the Ryzen 9s showing up on August 15. The eye of the petition is clearly targeted at GPT-5 as concerns over the technology continue to grow among governments and the public at large. Though few firm details have been released to date, here’s everything that’s been rumored so far.
This is an area the whole industry is exploring and part of the magic behind the Rabbit r1 AI device. It allows a user to do more than just ask the AI a question, rather you’d could ask the AI to handle calls, book flights or create a spreadsheet from data it gathered elsewhere. One CEO who got to experience a GPT-5 demo that provided use cases specific to his company was highly impressed by what OpenAI has showcased so far. As anyone who used ChatGPT in its early incarnations will tell you, the world’s now-favorite AI chatbot was as obviously flawed as it was wildly impressive.
Instead, we think that society and AGI developers need to work together to find out how to do it right. Despite the challenges and uncertainties surrounding AGI meaning, many researchers and organizations are actively pursuing this goal, driven by the potential for significant scientific, economic, and societal benefits. Some experts argue that achieving AGI meaning will require a deep understanding of the complex interactions between cognition, perception, and action, as well as the ability to integrate multiple sources of knowledge and experience. Despite the recent release of GPT4, GPT5 rumors are already started circulating. A new survey from GitHub looked at the everyday tools developers use for coding.
In other words, an AI that has achieved AGI could be indistinguishable from a human in its capabilities. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the latest news and rumors surrounding ChatGPT-5 and all things OpenAI. It may be a several more months before OpenAI officially announces the release date for GPT-5, but we will likely get more leaks and info as we get closer to that date. ChatGPT-5 could arrive as early as late 2024, although more in-depth safety checks could push it back to early or mid-2025. We can expect it to feature improved conversational skills, better language processing, improved contextual understanding, more personalization, stronger safety features, and more. It will likely also appear in more third-party apps, devices, and services like Apple Intelligence.
Microsoft, a major OpenAI investor, uses GPT-4 for Copilot, its generative AI service that acts as a virtual assistant for Microsoft 365 apps and various Windows 11 features. As of this week, Google is reportedly in talks with Apple over potentially adding Gemini to the iPhone, in addition to Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices which already have Gemini features. GPT-5 will likely be directed toward OpenAI’s enterprise customers, who fuel the majority of the company’s revenue. Potentially, with the launch of the new model, the company could establish a tier system similar to Google Gemini LLM tiers, with different model versions serving different purposes and customers. Currently, the GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo models are well-known for running the ChatGPT Plus paid consumer tier product, while the GPT-3.5 model runs the original and still free to use ChatGPT chatbot. Not according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who has publicly criticism his company’s current large language model, GPT-4, helping fuel new rumors suggesting the AI powerhouse could be preparing to release GPT-5 as soon as this summer.
Back in May, Altman told a Stanford University lecture that „GPT-4 is the dumbest model any of you will ever have to use”, even going so far as to call the flagship LLM „mildly embarrassing at best”. And, while the company still works to bring additional features from its ChatGPT-4o demo to fruition, its CEO already has his eyes on what’s next. That’s when we first got introduced to GPT-4 Turbo – the newest, most powerful version of GPT-4 – and if GPT-4.5 is indeed unveiled this summer then DevDay 2024 could give us our first look at GPT-5. Hot of the presses right now, as we’ve said, is the possibility that GPT-5 could launch as soon as summer 2024. Another way to think of it is that a GPT model is the brains of ChatGPT, or its engine if you prefer.
So, consider this a strong rumor, but this is the first time we’ve seen a potential release date for GPT-5 from a reputable source. Also, we now know that GPT-5 is reportedly complete enough to undergo testing, which means its major training run is likely complete. According to the report, OpenAI is still training GPT-5, and after that is complete, the model will undergo internal safety testing and further „red teaming” to identify and address any issues before its public release.
Depending on who you ask, such a breakthrough could either destroy the world or supercharge it. OpenAI is reportedly gearing up to release a more powerful version of ChatGPT in the coming months. Now that we’ve had the chips in hand for a while, here’s everything you need to know about Zen 5, Ryzen 9000, and Ryzen AI 300.
GPT-4 was billed as being much faster and more accurate in its responses than its previous model GPT-3. OpenAI later in 2023 released GPT-4 Turbo, part of an effort to cure an issue sometimes referred to as „laziness” because the model would sometimes refuse to answer prompts. It is designed to do away with the conventional text-based context window and instead converse using natural, spoken words, delivered in a lifelike manner. According to OpenAI, Advanced Voice, „offers more natural, real-time conversations, allows you to interrupt anytime, and senses and responds to your emotions.” GPT-5, OpenAI’s next large language model (LLM), is in the pipeline and should be launched within months, people close to the matter told Business Insider.
OpenAI also said the model can handle up to 25,000 words of text, allowing you to cross-examine or analyze long documents. According to a new report from Business Insider, OpenAI is expected to release GPT-5, an improved version of the AI language model that powers ChatGPT, sometime in mid-2024—and likely during the summer. Two anonymous sources familiar with the company have revealed that some enterprise customers have recently received demos of GPT-5 and related enhancements to ChatGPT. There is no specific timeframe when safety testing needs to be completed, one of the people familiar noted, so that process could delay any release date. The generative AI company helmed by Sam Altman is on track to put out GPT-5 sometime mid-year, likely during summer, according to two people familiar with the company.
This kind of self-directed learning and problem-solving is one of the hallmarks of AGI, as it shows that the AI system can adapt to new situations and use its own initiative. However, this also raises ethical and social issues, such as how to ensure that the AI system’s goals are aligned with human values and interests and how to regulate its actions and impacts. One of the key promises of AGI meaning is to create machines that can solve complex problems that are beyond the capabilities of human experts. When Bill Gates had Sam Altman on his podcast in January, Sam said that “multimodality” will be an important milestone for GPT in the next five years.
If it is the latter and we get a major new AI model it will be a significant moment in artificial intelligence as Altman has previously declared it will be “significantly better” than its predecessor and will take people by surprise. OpenAI is poised to release in the coming months the next version of its model for ChatGPT, the generative AI tool that kicked off the current wave of AI projects and investments. The last official update provided by OpenAI about GPT-5 was given in April 2023, in which it was said that there were “no plans” for training in the immediate future. Just a month after the release of GPT-4, CEO and co-founder Sam Altman quelled rumors about GPT-5, stating at the time that the rumors were “silly.” There were also early rumors of an incremental GPT-4.5, which persisted through late 2023. OpenAI has released several iterations of the large language model (LLM) powering ChatGPT, including GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo. Still, sources say the highly anticipated GPT-5 could be released as early as mid-year.
That letter asked companies like OpenAI to pause AI development beyond GPT-4, as AI might threaten humanity. AGI is best explained as chatbots like ChatGPT becoming indistinguishable from humans. AGI would allow these chatbots to understand any concept and task as a human would. Since GPT-4 is such a massive upgrade for ChatGPT, you wouldn’t necessarily expect OpenAI to be able to significantly exceed the capabilities of GPT-4 so soon with the upcoming GPT-5 upgrade. We can picture a future in which everyone has access to assistance with virtually any cognitive work thanks to AGI, which would be a tremendous boost to human intellect and innovation.
Currently, OpenAI allows anyone with ChatGPT Plus or Enterprise to build and explore custom “GPTs” that incorporate instructions, skills, or additional knowledge. Codecademy actually has a custom GPT (formerly known as a “plugin”) that you can use to find specific courses and search for Docs. Take a look at the GPT Store to see the creative GPTs that people are building. GPT-5 will likely be able to solve problems with greater accuracy because it’ll be trained on even more data with the help of more powerful computation. The latest GPT model came out in March 2023 and is “more reliable, creative, and able to handle much more nuanced instructions than GPT-3.5,” according to the OpenAI blog about the release. In the video below, Greg Brockman, President and Co-Founder of OpenAI, shows how the newest model handles prompts in comparison to GPT-3.5.
That tone, along with the quality of the information it provides, can degrade depending on what training data is used for updates or other changes OpenAI may make in its development and maintenance work. Throughout the last year, users have reported “laziness” and the “dumbing down” of GPT-4 as they experienced hallucinations, sassy backtalk, or query failures from the language model. There have been many potential explanations for these occurrences, including GPT-4 becoming smarter and more efficient as it is better trained, and OpenAI working on limited GPU resources. Some have also speculated that OpenAI had been training new, unreleased LLMs alongside the current LLMs, which overwhelmed its systems. Even though OpenAI released GPT-4 mere months after ChatGPT, we know that it took over two years to train, develop, and test.
It should be noted that spinoff tools like Bing Chat are being based on the latest models, with Bing Chat secretly launching with GPT-4 before that model was even announced. We could see a similar thing happen with GPT-5 when we eventually get there, but we’ll have to wait and see how things roll out. Of course, the sources in the report could be mistaken, and GPT-5 could launch later for reasons aside from testing.
